Monthly meeting. Wednesday May 8th with Paul Weaver.

Paul’s demonstration was made on a watercolour pad backboard which he had prepared with gesso. Although the water soluable oil paints he used dry more quickly than regular oils, he  was working against the clock to complete a painting in the time available.

Beginning with a burnt Sienna underpainting thinned with water to speed up the drying process, he then followed with a rapid drawing of the main shapes with a thin brush.

From there he proceeded to lay in the dark tones , adding blue to the mix,and lifting out lights sometimes with a cloth. Only when he was satisfied the whole painting was tonally accurate did he begin to introduce colours.

Still working rapidly with spontaneous brush marks, he stressed not to over finish before all the colours were there. Final details were introduced with thick paint gently applied over the still damp underpainting with areas still allowed to show though in places.

A masterful demonstration, which was much appreciated by a large crowd.
